September and October are the best months to play golf in Marbella. The heat leaves the afternoons, the August crowds go home, and the courses come back into condition after a hard summer. The Costa del Sol has more than 70 courses and over 320 days of sunshine a year, and autumn is when both actually work in your favour. Budget roughly 120 to 180 euros for a green fee in the Nueva AndalucĂa Golf Valley, and 200 euros or more at the championship clubs.
Which courses are worth the autumn trip?
Four courses share a single valley behind Puerto BanĂşs: Los Naranjos, Las Brisas, Aloha and La Quinta. It is the densest concentration of good golf in Spain, and you can play a different one each morning without moving hotel. Los Naranjos is the fairest test for a mid handicapper. Las Brisas and Aloha are the championship pair, and both ask for a handicap certificate, usually 28 for men and 36 for ladies, so bring proof rather than argue at the desk.
Inland, BenahavĂs is the quieter option. The drive up from the coast takes twenty minutes and the courses there are noticeably cheaper in October than anything in the valley.
When should you book a tee time?
Two to three weeks ahead for September, and four to six weeks for the October half term, which is the busiest fortnight of the autumn. Morning tee times go first. If you are flexible, an afternoon round in October is both cheaper and, at that time of year, perfectly comfortable.
Where to stay for a golf week
Staying inside the valley saves you the one thing a golf trip cannot spare, which is the morning drive. Premavista manages a two bedroom apartment in UrbanizaciĂłn Los Naranjos, a few minutes from the first tee, plus three bedroom apartments at Eagles Village in La Quinta and at Capanes del Golf in BenahavĂs. All three sleep four to six, so a fourball splits the cost sensibly.
Nueva AndalucĂa also has the best autumn eating on this stretch of coast, and our Nueva AndalucĂa guide covers where to book. If you are still choosing dates, our month by month guide to Marbella sets out the weather, and there is a separate BenahavĂs guide for the inland option.
